Sebastopol, CA Area Guide

Located just 50 miles north of San Francisco, the City of Sebastopol is a semi-urban community with a population of about 7,800 people. The city is known for its small town atmosphere, friendly residents, and liberal politics. The land here was once used for plum and apple crops, but is now used primarily for vineyards. Many orchards here do still exist though, and the Apple Blossom Festival and Gravenstein Apple Fair are held here every year.

Sebastopol is the home of O’Reilly Media book and software publishers, Lowepro, Inc. camera bag manufacturer, and a variety of musicians such as Les Claypool, Tom Waits, and Nick Gravenites.

Sebastopol History

The first inhabitants of this area were the Miwok and Pomo peoples. The town was established in the 1850s as a small trade center for farmers in the region. As more and more people moved to California during the westward migration and the Gold Rush many people headed to the fertile lands north of San Francisco to grow crops. Over the years the apple industry continued to bring new residents to the area, and the town officially incorporated in 1902. The 1906 destroyed many of the early wineries, mills, and churches that existed here, but the residents banned together to rebuild quickly.

Eventually the apple industry in Sebastopol declined, and it became a town offering a limited range of goods and services to compete with the larger shopping centers found in other Sonoma towns.
